Bank of Ghana to Celebrate 60 Years of the Cedi

The Bank of Ghana has announced a series of events to mark the 60th anniversary of the Ghanaian cedi, the country’s national currency.

Themed “Cedi@60: Our Money, Our Pride”, the commemoration will celebrate the evolution of the cedi since its introduction in July 1965, when it replaced the Ghanaian pound.

The central bank says the milestone will be observed with exhibitions, lectures, and nationwide educational programmes to raise awareness about the currency’s role in Ghana’s economic journey.

Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, who took office earlier this year, is expected to spearhead the celebrations, highlighting the need to protect the value of the cedi and foster financial literacy.

Since its launch, the cedi has undergone significant changes, including redenomination in 2007 and several security upgrades to combat counterfeiting. Officials say the celebration is not only a reflection of Ghana’s economic history but also a call for greater fiscal discipline.
