The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam and his entourage have paid a condolence visit to the Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi, mourning the passing of Pope Francis.
The interfaith delegation met Emeritus Archbishop Peter Kwasi Sarpong on Monday, 5 May 2025, to offer sympathy and prayers on behalf of the Muslim community in the Ashanti Region. The visit was aimed at reinforcing religious harmony between Ghana’s Islamic and Christian communities.
The Catholic Church in Kumasi had earlier held a memorial at St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica, where hundreds gathered to honour the late Pope, who passed away on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025. A large portrait of Pope Francis was displayed as clergy and congregants observed solemn tributes.
Pope Francis’ death triggered global mourning, and Ghana joined the rest of the world in paying respects. President John Mahama, former President Kufuor, and other leaders have all issued messages of condolence.
This latest visit by the Chief Imam underscores Ghana’s strong tradition of interfaith cooperation and peaceful coexistence.
