Dutch footballer Memphis Depay has been handed a four month suspended prison sentence and fined €9,000 for drunk driving in Monaco. The incident occurred on August 6, 2024, when Depay was stopped by police in Monaco’s Place d’Armes for “risky driving.” A breathalyzer test revealed an alcohol level of 1.01 mg per liter of exhaled air, significantly exceeding the legal limit. In addition to the suspended sentence and fine, Depay has been banned from driving in Monaco for two years. He did not attend the court hearing and has two weeks to appeal the decision.
Following the verdict, Depay issued a public apology, acknowledging his mistake and expressing regret. He referred to 2024 as a year of lessons and committed to self improvement in 2025.
Depay, currently playing for Brazilian club Corinthians has had a notable football career including stints with PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Olympique Lyonnais, FC Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid. He has also been a key player for the Netherlands national team and has scored 46 goals in 98 appearances.
