Shocking: These Phones Will Not Support WhatsApp in 2025

Picture of WhatsApp News on Unsupported Android and iPhones

WhatsApp will no longer be supported on 18 Android models and 3 iPhone models starting in 2025, according to recent reports. This decision stems from changes in WhatsApp’s compatibility with older operating systems, rendering some older smartphones unable to run the app.

While the number of affected users may be small, this announcement could be distressing for those impacted, particularly as the New Year approaches. The first phase of this compatibility update will take effect on January 1, 2025, when WhatsApp will stop supporting Android’s KitKat operating system and earlier versions. However, users with KitKat-powered devices may still access WhatsApp if their phones are eligible for an upgrade to a more recent operating system.

Unfortunately, some older phone models no longer receive official updates from manufacturers. This means that unless users resort to risky DIY modifications—which could void warranties and potentially “brick” (render inoperable) their devices—upgrading the OS may not be an option.

List of Android Phones Affected as of January 1, 2025:

  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini

From May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will also discontinue support for iOS versions earlier than 15.1. While many iPhone users can simply update their devices, others using older models may find themselves unable to do so. For instance, the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7, which will no longer meet WhatsApp’s system requirements.

This change will affect both the regular WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business, as both apps share the same compatibility standards.

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, explains that these updates are part of their regular efforts to ensure the app remains secure, functional, and compatible with newer devices. As technology advances, such changes are necessary to provide users with the best possible experience.

Users with older devices should consider upgrading to a newer smartphone to continue enjoying uninterrupted access to WhatsApp and its features.
