Are you a non-professional teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service? Do you wish to be licensed by the National Teaching Council? There is good news for you!

In order to improve the quality of education in Ghana, the Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC), has announced an initiative to register, train, and license all non-professional teachers in the country. Non-professional teachers are the category of teachers who do not have any official certification of initial teacher education and training. These teachers neither attended Teacher training colleges nor offered any education-related courses/programmes in their fields of study. Such teachers are usually referred to as ‘untrained teachers‘.

This was contained in a letter signed by the Deputy Director-General in Charge of Management Services of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu.

This exercise is in line with Section 67 (1) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act (2020), Act 1023. The Act mandates the NTC to to regulate the teaching profession in Ghana. As part of the Council’s regulatory functions, it is mandated to conduct examination for licensing of people who desire to teach and make provision for the licensing of practicing teachers.

This registration is aimed at ensuring that every teacher in Ghana’s Basic and Senior High, and TVET Schools is professionally trained and licensed.

Let’s try to delve a bit deeper into the exercise. As part of the initiative, the NTC is offering a special opportunity to facilitate the registration and licensing of all Non-Professional Teachers currently employed. The program is designed to equip untrained teachers with the necessary qualifications and skills, ultimately leading to the issuance of a professional teaching license.

The untrained teachers who qualify for this programme are categorized as into 2 groups:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Holders: Teachers with a bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Non-Bachelor’s Degree Holders: This group includes teachers with qualifications such as HND, Diploma, WASSCE, SSCE, O’/A’ Level, NAPTEX, MSLC, among others.

The Training Process

The training program is structured to cater to the different categories of the untrained/professional teachers:

  1. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for Degree Holders: All Bachelor’s Degree holders are required to enroll in a PGDE program at an accredited Teacher Education University. Upon successful completion of this 16-week fast-track program, participants will receive their Teachers’ Registration and License. This program is specifically for those who were already teaching before September 30, 2018.
  2. Booth Camp Training for Non-Degree Holders: Non-Bachelor’s Degree holders will undergo a one-week training program at designated institutions. Successful completion of this training will also lead to registration and licensing. Similar to the PGDE program, this training is exclusive to those who began teaching before September 30, 2018.
  3. Participants in these two Programmes will not be required to write licensure Examinations, as this forms part of the transitional arrangements for those who were employed by the Ghana Education Service before the introduction of the Licensure Examinations in 2018.

Detailed arrangements, including fees, shall be communicated in due course.

Notably, participants in these two programs will not be required to take the licensure examinations, as the training serves as part of the transitional arrangements for those employed before the introduction of the Licensure Examinations in 2018.
