Basic schools across Ghana officially close today, Thursday, July 23, 2026, bringing the 2025/2026 academic year to a successful end.
All public basic schools nationwide are ending the academic year today in line with the academic calendar approved by the Ghana Education Service (GES). A majority of private basic schools are also closing today, although a few private institutions are expected to end their academic year next Thursday, depending on their individual academic schedules.
The long vacation provides learners with a well-deserved break after months of classroom instruction, continuous assessment, examinations, and co-curricular activities. It also gives teachers the opportunity to complete academic records, prepare promotion reports, and make the necessary arrangements for the next academic year.
For many pupils, this vacation is particularly significant because it marks their promotion to the next class or grade. Learners who have successfully met the academic requirements will move on to the next level to continue their educational journey when schools reopen. This transition represents another important milestone in their academic and personal development.
According to the academic calendar, the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year will commence on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Parents and guardians are therefore encouraged to use the vacation period to adequately prepare their children with the necessary school supplies, uniforms, books, and other learning materials before the reopening date.
During the vacation, pupils are advised to remain safe, responsible, and productive. They should make good use of their time by assisting their parents or guardians with appropriate household responsibilities while also setting aside time to revise their books, read storybooks, and engage in educational activities that will keep their minds active.
Parents should also supervise their children closely to ensure they avoid negative influences and unsafe environments during the holiday period.
As another academic year comes to a close, GH Educate Media congratulates all pupils for their hard work and resilience, appreciate teachers for their dedication and commitment to quality education, and commend parents for their continuous support throughout the school year.
We wish every learner, teacher, and parent a safe, peaceful, and refreshing vacation and look forward to a successful 2026/2027 academic year.
