President Mahama Directs Dissolution of National Cathedral Board

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Attorney-General to immediately dissolve the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana, citing the need for a fresh review of the project’s governance and purpose.

The directive comes at a time when many Ghanaians have expressed deep concerns over the financial management and lack of transparency surrounding the project, which has faced multiple delays and cost overruns.

In a statement from the Presidency, the President emphasised the importance of restoring public confidence in national projects. “We must rebuild trust by showing that no undertaking, no matter how symbolic, is above public accountability. Citizens deserve full clarity on how their resources are being managed,” the statement read.

The National Cathedral, envisioned as a national Christian monument, was initiated under Former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration. However, the blending of public funds and religious interests has remained controversial, with critics raising questions about its relevance amidst pressing economic challenges.

President Mahama’s decision signals his administration’s commitment to responsible governance and a willingness to listen to public sentiment. Sources close to the Presidency say a full audit will be conducted to understand the scale of the project’s spending and identify any breaches of financial governance.

The government has pledged to engage religious leaders, civil society, and the wider public as it charts a new course for the project and determines how best to honour the spiritual and cultural aspirations of Ghanaians.
