Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, led a delegation including the Ministry’s Chief Director, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and NSA officials to Manhyia Palace on July 10, 2025. They paid a courtesy call on Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, reporting on recent inspections of Baba Yara Sports Stadium and the stalled Nyinahin Youth Resource Centre.
Hon Adams presented an alarming findings of Baba Yara and he stated that it requires urgent re‑grassing, floodlight repairs, spectator stand refurbishment, and structural upgrades to meet CAF licensing standards for upcoming continental fixtures involving Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars. According to Hon. Adams, the Nyinahin complex, a planned 5,000 seat multipurpose venue which has been abandoned since November 2024, remains physically dilapidated despite being 95% complete on paper.
Otumfuo pledged to spearhead a fundraising campaign among major mining companies to support both projects as king requested full cost estimates from the Ministry “without delay”. He expressed “shock at the unacceptable state” of the stadium and affirmed his “full backing” in restoring Ashanti’s sporting pride.
Minister Adams welcomed the royal endorsement, underlining the importance of collaboration between traditional leadership, government, and private sector to safeguard Ghana’s sporting heritage. He confirmed that detailed engineering estimates would be submitted in days, and a joint task force will be formed to ensure transparency and timely delivery.
The Manhyia Palace meeting emphasized a decisive effort to revive critical sports infrastructure in the Ashanti Region ahead of major competitions. With the backing of Otumfuo and a structured multi-sectoral plan, work on Baba Yara and Nyinahin is poised to begin immediately.
