In response to the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, Liverpool FC has pledged to pay out the final two years of his contract valued at approximately £14.5 million (~$20 million) directly to his widow Rute Cardoso and their three young children.
The official gesture, confirmed by the club and widely reported, also includes a lifetime commitment to support Jota’s children, and the establishment of a special fund dedicated to their future education, housing, and well‑being, to be managed transparently with family involvement.
Liverpool staff, coaching personnel, and board members flew to Portugal to attend the funeral in Gondomar, where Jota and his brother André were laid to rest following the fatal car crash in Northwestern Spain on 3 July 2025.
The club has paid tribute by retiring Jota’s No. 20 shirt, marking his indelible contributions of 65 goals in 182 appearances as the team secured the 2024–25 Premier League title.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has vowed unwavering support to the family, calling Jota “an exceptional family man,” while thousands of fans have left flowers and memorabilia at Anfield in a heartfelt display of solidarity.
Since joining Liverpool in 2020 for £41 million, Jota emerged as a powerhouse forward, helping the Reds claim a Premier League title, FA Cup, League Cup, and two Nations League triumphs with Portugal.
