Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been brought out of an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery offering a hopeful sign after a harrowing injury sustained during a Premier League match against Leicester City on Sunday, May 11.
The 27 year old Nigerian international collided with the goalpost in the 88th minute while attempting to reach a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Despite receiving on field treatment, Awoniyi continued playing briefly before being substituted. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed a ruptured intestine which necessitated immediate surgical intervention. The surgery was conducted in two stages and that was the initial procedure on Monday, followed by a second on Wednesday to close the wound. To aid his recovery and stabilize vital functions, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma between the procedures.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed frustration over the handling of the incident particularly the decision to allow Awoniyi to continue playing post injury. He was seen confronting manager Nuno Espirito Santo on the pitch after the match which led to the club initiating an internal investigation into the medical team’s response. The incident has also reignited debate over the current offside protocol. Elanga was in an offside position during the play but the assistant referee delayed raising the flag in accordance with VAR guidelines which some argue contributed to the severity of Awoniyi’s injury.
As of Thursday morning, Nottingham Forest confirmed that Awoniyi is recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery though a timeline for his return to the pitch remains uncertain.
