President John Dramani Mahama has nominated seven justices from the Court of Appeal to be elevated to the Supreme Court of Ghana. The nominations were made in accordance with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint Supreme Court judges in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament.
The nominees are currently serving judges at the appellate level and have been recognised for their integrity, judicial experience, and commitment to the delivery of justice. This move comes at a time when the Supreme Court’s workload continues to expand, requiring additional hands to ensure timely adjudication of critical national matters.
In submitting the names, President Mahama emphasised the importance of strengthening the judicial arm of government to uphold democracy, deepen the rule of law, and maintain public confidence in the justice system.
Parliament is expected to vet and approve the nominees following the necessary consultations with the Council of State. If confirmed, this will be one of the most significant additions to the bench in recent years, expanding the number of Justices available to handle complex constitutional, civil, and criminal matters.
Legal analysts view the nominations as a strategic effort to ensure continuity, institutional stability, and legal expertise at the apex court.
