The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC), held a two-day symposium at the Sunset Hotel in Kumasi on Thursday, October 3, 2024, and Friday, October 4, 2024.
The event culminated with a grand durbar on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). This annual event is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating outstanding educators in Ghana.
The event was honored by the presence of several distinguished personalities, including Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education; Hon. Simon Osei Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister; Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Director General of the Ghana Education Service; Mr. Robin Todd, Executive Director of T-TEL; Rev. Isaac Owusu, President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT); and Dr. William Kwame Amankra Appiah, the Regional Director of Education for the Ashanti Region, among others.
The theme for this year’s event was “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education.” This theme emphasizes the importance of involving teachers in policy-making processes, stressing that their insights are crucial for shaping the future of education in Ghana.

Throughout the events, various goodwill addresses were delivered by prominent figures, addressing the challenges and achievements within the educational sector. Among these addresses was one delivered by Rev. Isaac Owusu, the President of GNAT. In his speech, Rev. Owusu commended Dr. Osei Adutwum for his unwavering support and initiatives in the education sector, particularly in promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
Rev. Owusu outlined several pressing concerns that require immediate attention from the government:
- Implementation of Rural Community Allowance for Teachers: He emphasized that this allowance has been part of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Conditions of Service since 2009, but its implementation remains pending. Teachers in rural areas often face additional challenges, and this allowance would provide essential support.
- Delayed Upgrading of Teachers: The delay in upgrading some teachers to their current grades and ranks has led to dissatisfaction among educators, affecting their morale and productivity.
- Issues with GES-MIS: Rev. Owusu highlighted the difficulties associated with the implementation of the GES Management Information System (GES-MIS), particularly regarding salary payments, which have caused significant distress among some staff within the GES.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, also delivered a keynote address during the grand durbar. In his speech, he highlighted the government’s achievements in the education sector over the past seven years, emphasizing improvements in infrastructure, curriculum development, and teacher training. He assured the teachers that their concerns, as raised by Rev. Owusu, would be given immediate consideration and that the government is committed to addressing these challenges.
Following the addresses, the ceremony shifted focus to the main event, that is, the presentation of awards and prizes to the winners of the 2024 Ghana Teacher Prize. This prestigious award seeks to recognize the dedication and hard work of educators across various categories.

- Best Teacher: Fuseina Fuseini – Three-Bedroom Apartment

- 2nd Runner Up: Diana Rose Elorm Adonu – Saloon Car

- Best KG Teacher: Annette Asieduwaa Owusu – GH₵ 20,000 and a laptop
- Best Primary Teacher: Antoinette Kumi – GH₵ 30,000
- Best JHS Teacher: George Ebanyenle Ackah – GH₵ 30,000
- Best DL Practice Teacher: Faustina Asaabo – GH₵ 40,000 and a laptop

At the event, it was emphasized that these awards and prizes aim to motivate both teachers and non-teaching staff and encourage them to give their best efforts in their roles. The celebration of these achievements is a crucial step in fostering a positive environment for both teachers and students, ultimately leading to an improved educational system in Ghana.
