A presenter at Wontumi TV, Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, was relieved of his duties following a broadcast in which he alleged that former President John Dramani Mahama had a role in Ghana’s recent military helicopter crash.
The controversial remarks sparked swift legal and corporate repercussions. On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Asare was arrested and charged by Thursday, August 14, an Accra Circuit Court denied his bail application. His defense team, led by counsel Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, promptly declared its intention to appeal the ruling to the High Court.
Wontumi TV issued a formal apology describing the presenter’s comments as “insensitive” and unprofessional offering remorse to President Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the Ghanaian public.
There was confusion following a denial from Wontumi Radio regarding any official apology. Gordon Asare-Bediako, a management figure within the group, clarified that an apology statement circulating on social media was unauthorised and came from fake accounts, not the station’s official channels.
