WAEC Shuts Down Kumasi Exam Centre After Examination Malpractice Scandal

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has shut down an exam centre in Kumasi and relocated nearly 1,000 candidates after uncovering widespread malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

A total of 936 students from Adventist Day Senior High School were affected by the decision. Instead of writing their English Language paper on campus, they were bused to WAEC’s regional office under stricter supervision.

The move was announced on Thursday, September 4, during a monitoring exercise led by the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi. He toured several centres to encourage candidates and assess conditions as more than 15,000 students from 14 state-run schools in the city sit the exams.

Examination malpractice remains a longstanding challenge in Ghana. Last year, WAEC was forced to cancel results at a number of centres across the country after irregularities were detected. Education officials warn that the credibility of national qualifications is at stake if such practices are not brought under control.

Kumasi Metro Education Director, David Oppong, expressed his disappointment. “This has come to the attention of the regional director, and we are yet to do our investigation,” he said. “It is very unfortunate.”

Mr Oppong also urged invigilators and school authorities to remain vigilant. “If we continue to allow and encourage these things in our schools, it means we are destroying the nation. We will ensure that the code of conduct and the rules governing the examination will be applied.”

Authorities say investigations are under way, while parents and students are being urged to respect exam rules. The incident has renewed calls for tougher monitoring systems to protect the integrity of Ghana’s education system and ensure merit is rewarded.
