WAEC Releases 2025 BECE Provisional Results; Malpractices Lead to Cancellations and Withheld Scripts

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results for candidates who sat for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates. The announcement, made on Saturday, August 23, 2025, brings relief to over 600,000 students and their families as results become available through schools and online.

A total of 603,328 candidates from 20,395 participating schools wrote the examination, comprising 297,250 boys and 306,078 girls. The exam was conducted at 2,237 centres across the country, with 2,526 candidates absent. The cohort also included 72 visually impaired candidates, 239 with hearing impairment, and 161 with other special accommodation needs.

Despite the successful conduct of the exams, cases of malpractice were reported. Following investigations, the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee of WAEC cancelled the subject results of 718 candidates and the entire results of 177 candidates. In addition, the subject results of 1,240 candidates and the entire results of 93 candidates have been withheld pending further investigations.

The withheld results include candidates from 119 schools, while some scripts from 87 schools are undergoing further scrutiny. WAEC indicated that final decisions on these withheld cases will be taken by September 6, 2025. Candidates can check the status of withheld or cancelled results on the Council’s irregularity portal at https://irreg.waec.org.

In its statement, WAEC cautioned candidates and parents against fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee, stressing that official results are secure and can be authenticated. “We wish to caution all stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results. WAEC results are secured and cannot be altered,” the Council warned.

The Council further expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, heads of schools, supervisors, invigilators, examiners, and other stakeholders whose collective efforts ensured the smooth conduct of the 2025 BECE.

For candidates, the release marks a defining moment as they transition from basic education to senior high schools under the Free SHS policy. However, for those affected by malpractice investigations, the weeks ahead remain uncertain as they await the final verdict.
