UCC Graduates 63 Inmates from Nsawam Prison

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has graduated 63 inmates from the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in the Eastern Region of Ghana who successfully completed their undergraduate programmes through the College of Distance Education (CoDE).

The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Madam Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, encouraged the graduates to strive for greater academic excellence with a complete change of mindset and attitude.

It was revealed at the graduation ceremony that the inmates’ tertiary education journey began in November 2019 with an initial enrollment of 58 inmates in degree programmes in education, commerce, and junior high school education. But today, the programme has expanded to accommodate 300 student inmates.

The Ghana Prisons Service, in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast and with sponsorship from the Plan Volta Initiative, supports the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates through education.

Academic Performance Summary:

  • Bachelor of Education (JHS Education): Three (3) students graduated with First Class, 10 with Second Class Upper Division, 19 with Second Class Lower Division, six (6) with Third Class, and one (1) with a Pass.
  • Bachelor of Commerce (Management): One (1) student obtained a Second Class Upper Division, seven (7) earned Second Class Lower Division, three (3) received Third Class, and six (6) graduated with Passes.
  • Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting): Two (2) students graduated with Second Class Upper Division, two (2) with Second Class Lower Division, one (1) with Third Class, and two (2) with Passes.

The graduates comprised 58 males and five (5) females, with Mathew Milluzieh emerging as the Overall Best Graduating Student, attaining a CGPA of 3.8.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, announced that the college would award scholarships to inmates to help them further their education.
