The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu Orders Strict Enforcement of School Phone Ban

The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the National Inspectorate Board to intensify enforcement of the ban on mobile phone usage in schools, while also calling for stronger measures to address the emerging threat of students bringing weapons to school premises.

Speaking at a meeting with the governing boards of the National Inspectorate Board and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) in Accra, the Minister described the growing presence of weapons in schools as a serious concern that threatens the safety and well-being of students and staff alike.

“We are not only concerned with the student carrying the weapon, but more importantly, the potential harm it can cause to others. It is imperative that we act to safeguard the learning environment,” he emphasized.

Hon. Iddrisu urged parents to collaborate closely with school management to instil discipline among learners and called on school authorities to exercise their full mandate in upholding safety protocols.

He also expressed deep concern over the increasing use of mobile phones to facilitate examination malpractice, noting that in some instances, even supervisors and invigilators have been implicated. “We must take decisive action. The ban on mobile phones in schools is being flouted, and we must ensure its strict enforcement to uphold the integrity of our assessment systems,” the Minister stated.

The Minister reiterated the need for a standardized textbook policy to enhance teaching and learning outcomes nationwide. He outlined key upcoming reforms, including the introduction of artificial intelligence and coding at the basic school level, alongside the launch of a “Young Academic Skills” initiative to promote patriotism, civic responsibility, and foundational learning.

“These initiatives are not only about academic excellence but also about nurturing responsible citizens with strong values, social skills, and national identity,” he added.

Stakeholders have welcomed the Minister’s remarks and are expected to begin implementing related policy measures in the coming weeks.
