When a new Parliament commences its work, one of its first tasks is to establish committees to effectively manage its duties. This process is governed by the Standing Orders of Parliament, which outline the rules and procedures of the House. These committees are essential for ensuring the smooth functioning of Parliament and fulfilling its responsibilities as outlined in Article 103 of the Constitution.
On January 8, 2025, during the first sitting of the Ninth Parliament, three key committees were formed:
a) Appointments Committee
b) Committee of Selection
c) Business Committee
The Appointments Committee is responsible for reviewing ministerial nominations to ensure that individuals selected by the President are competent and suitable for their designated roles. The committee then recommends the vetted nominees to the House for approval or rejection, either by consensus or vote.
