“I have nothing to hide. I don’t gain anything from galamsey… you can be assured that we are all on the same side.” – President John Dramani Mahama
“The fight against illegal mining cannot be won by government alone. President Mahama’s call to civil society underscores his belief that Ghana’s future must be protected through unity, transparency, and shared responsibility.”
Chairman Wontumi has sued the Ghanaian government and the Lands Minister over claims that his company, Akonta Mining, is illegally operating in protected forest reserves.
“I did not deceive myself that we would end galamsey in four months—but we will never give up,” President Mahama said.
Following an attack on Forestry Commission operatives by illegal miners, social media users are calling for a harsher crackdown, including a “shoot-to-kill” policy.
