Italy is having talks with Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, about a big deal worth 1.5 billion euros ($1.55 billion).
The deal would provide the Italian government with secure phone and internet services. Bloomberg News shared this information on Sunday.
While the deal isn’t finished yet, it has already been approved by Italy’s Intelligence Services and Defence Ministry. Sources say the contract would last for five years.
SpaceX would help Italy by providing strong encryption, which means making sure phone and internet services are safe from spying. The deal would also provide communications for Italy’s military in the Mediterranean area and set up satellite services for emergencies, like natural disasters or terrorist attacks.
This news comes after Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.
Meloni is also working closely with Elon Musk, who is a friend of Donald Trump.
In addition, Italy is testing Musk’s Starlink internet service to see if it can help provide faster internet in the country. These tests could start as soon as January, 2025.
