South Africa’s U-20 national team known as Amajita, secured their first ever CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title with a 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final held on May 18, 2025, at the Cairo International Stadium. The decisive goal came from midfielder Tylon Smith who was later named Player of the Tournament. Goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe also earned accolades, being recognized as the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper.
Amajita’s journey to the title included topping Group A with victories over Tanzania and Sierra Leone whiles draw against Zambia. In the quarterfinals, they defeated DR Congo 1-0 and secured qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. A 2-1 win over Ghana in the semifinals set the stage for their historic final against Morocco.
This victory marks a significant milestone for South African youth football, coming 28 years after their runner-up finish in the 1997 edition of the tournament.
