Saudi Arabia’s audacious vision for the 2034 FIFA World Cup is taking shape with the planned construction of a breathtaking Sky Stadium with an architectural marvel suspended 350 meters above the desert floor, perched atop The Line in the futuristic city of Neom. The Sky Stadium forms the cornerstone of a network of 15 venues in total by spanning Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abha, and Neom, including new builds and renovations. These include the King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh, with a capacity near 93,000 to host the opening match and the final, and the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium which is a clifftop venue with retractable roof and pitch.
However, this bold vision is not without its critics. Experts warn the massive construction of 11 new stadiums and 4 renovations that could yield greenhouse gas emissions nearly double those of previous World Cups, casting a shadow over its environmental credentials. Additional scrutiny surrounds potential human rights and labor concerns amid the rapid development push.
