Marcus Rashford was officially named Champions League Player of the Week after his two-goal masterclass for Barcelona in their 2-1 away win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. In what was his debut in the Champions League for Barça, Rashford broke the deadlock with a headed goal in the 58th minute and sealed victory nine minutes later with a stunning strike from outside the area.
The brace constitutes his first goals for Barcelona in the competition, coming after a lengthy Champions League goal drought.
Coach Hansi Flick praised Rashford’s performance as he called it a timely statement of intent, while teammates including Ronald Araújo hailed not only the goals but the confidence and quality they saw in training.
The win gaves Barça their first points in the group stage and provides a major lift for Rashford, who has clearly made the most of a chance to shine on English soil.
