Public Concern as OA Transport Allegedly Ignores New Approved Fare Reductions

A recent encounter at the OA bus terminal in Kumasi has sparked concern over the implementation of the 15% reduction in transport fares announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ministry of Transport.

According to a passenger traveling from Kumasi to Paga, the ticket was still being sold at the old price of GHS 210, despite the official directive to reduce fares nationwide. When questioned, the attendant reportedly stated that “management has instructed us to continue with the old fare until further notice.”

“I was shocked,” the passenger said. “This is not just unfair—it’s harmful. If we don’t hold each other accountable, even the best policies will fail.”

The passenger later took to Facebook, posting a photo of the ticket as evidence and urging the public to speak up. The post has since attracted attention from other travelers who claim to have faced similar issues.

“It’s our own people who sometimes cause more harm than good. This needs to be addressed publicly,” he added.

The GPRTU announced the 15% fare reduction following a drop in fuel prices, with new rates scheduled to take effect from Saturday, 25th May 2025. However, reports such as this suggest non-compliance by some transport companies, raising questions about enforcement.

The passenger is calling on transport regulators and the Ministry of Transport to ensure immediate enforcement and accountability, urging fellow commuters to share their experiences.
