Paris Saint Germain (PSG) have advanced to the UEFA Champions League final after defeating Arsenal 2–1 in the second leg of their semi final clash that has resulted in a 3–1 aggregate triumph. The French champions will now face Inter Milan in the final on May 31 in Munich.
PSG entered the second leg at Parc des Princes with a 1–0 advantage from the first leg courtesy Ousmane Dembélé at the Emirates Stadium. In the return match, Fabian Ruiz doubled PSG’s overall lead with a brilliant volley and Achraf Hakimi added another after capitalizing on a defensive error by Thomas Partey. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka pulled one back to make it 2–1 on the night but the Gunners couldn’t overturn the deficit. Despite periods of dominance, Arsenal were denied by a rock solid PSG defense and several key saves from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Ousmane Dembélé was instrumental throughout both legs as he scored and assisted across the tie. He set a new record for the most goal contributions by a French club player in a single Champions League season with 12 (8 goals, 4 assists). His resurgence under manager Luis Enrique has been key to PSG’s European run.
Arsenal’s elimination means another season without a major trophy whiles fifth on a row in the EPL. Mikel Arteta’s side showed promise but ultimately lacked the cutting edge against a clinical PSG. With victories over top English clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal PSG’s road to the final has been nothing short of dominant. The Parisian club now prepares to face Inter Milan in Munich and hoping to become the first French team to lift the Champions League trophy since Marseille in 1993.
