President Mahama Suspends Fuel Allowances for Political Appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate cancellation of payment of fuel allowances and allocations for all political appointees, as part of renewed efforts to reduce government expenditure and reallocate resources to more urgent national priorities.

A statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the move as a strategic measure to curb non-essential spending amid ongoing economic pressures.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement emphasized.

This new directive follows earlier cost-saving actions taken by the administration, including the decision to reduce the number of ministers and staff at the Presidency. Government has also halted satellite TV subscriptions for certain offices within the Presidency and other state institutions to minimize unnecessary overheads.

The decision is expected to send a strong signal of fiscal discipline and a demonstration of the government’s commitment to prudent spending in challenging times. Officials say more such reforms may follow, as President Mahama works to streamline operations and reinforce accountability in public service.
