President John Dramani Mahama has formally nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana. The nomination was made in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution and has been forwarded to the Council of State for consideration.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, a respected jurist, has served with distinction throughout his judicial career. From his early years on the High Court, through the Court of Appeal, and now at the Supreme Court, he has consistently demonstrated integrity, fairness, and an unwavering dedication to justice.
The Presidency highlighted his invaluable contributions to Ghana’s jurisprudence. Over the years, his judgments and legal reasoning have shaped the country’s legal framework, strengthening both the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has also earned the esteem of colleagues across the Bench and Bar. The wider legal fraternity recognizes him for his intellect, impartiality, and commitment to safeguarding the justice system.
With decades of experience, his nomination is seen as a culmination of a career defined by excellence and service. The Presidency underscored that his wealth of experience makes him eminently qualified for the high office of Chief Justice.
It was further noted that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, a period during which he has already provided steady leadership to the judiciary. His confirmation would therefore mark both a continuation and a renewal of judicial stewardship at the highest level.
Announcing the nomination, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized President Mahama’s confidence in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s ability to strengthen the judiciary and deepen public trust in the justice system.
