President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the “Black Star Experience,” a transformative cultural and tourism initiative aimed at positioning Ghana as the premier gateway to Africa for the global diaspora. The programme was revealed by the President during the State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025. According to the President, this flagship programme seeks to celebrate Ghana’s rich heritage, revitalized the creative arts sector, and stimulate economic growth through a year long series of events and activities.
The Black Star Experience is designed as a comprehensive year round celebration comprissing various facets of Ghanaian culture, history, and innovation. Each month is dedicated to a unique theme, offering both residents and visitors immersive experiences:
January, New Year, New Africa: Pan African dialogues and art exhibitions envisioning a unified and innovative Africa. February, Black History & Heritage Month, Guided tours and cultural performances highlighting the African diaspora’s legacy.
March, Ghana’s Independence & Nation Building, Public commemorations and exhibitions tracing Ghana’s journey to independence. April, Afrobeat & Highlife Music Festival: Concerts and masterclasses showcasing Ghana’s musical contributions. May, African Royalty & Chieftaincy Month, Celebrations of Ghana’s regal traditions through durbars and storytelling sessions
June, Return & Reconnection, Heritage tours and dialogues inviting the African diaspora to trace their roots. July, Freedom & Justice, Panels and discussions on Ghana’s democratic journey. August – Afro-Fashion & Textile Innovation, Runway shows and workshops on traditional weaving and sustainable practices. September, Spirituality & Traditional Beliefs, Pilgrimages and interfaith dialogues exploring Ghana’s spiritual landscape.
October, Business & Innovation, Forums and showcases highlighting Ghana’s entrepreneurial spirit. November – Culinary & Food Festival, Food fairs and cooking demonstrations celebrating Ghanaian cuisine. December, Year of Return & Cultural Renaissance: Grand festivals and historical tours revisiting the “Year of Return” ethos. These thematic months aim to provide a dynamic journey celebrating every facet of Ghanaian identity, from its storied past to its promising future.
The Black Star Experience is poised to have significant economic implications. By integrating efforts from multiple government agencies and ministries, the initiative aims to attract international visitors, stimulate the creative arts sector, and promote MICE tourism. It also includes revitalizing historic sites like the Osu Castle and rebranding Ghana’s image globally. President Mahama emphasized that the initiative is not just about tourism but about creating a uniquely Ghanaian brand that resonates globally can foster deeper connections between Ghana and the global African community.
The Black Star Experience also includes measures to support Ghana’s creative industry, such as the revival of the Creative Arts Fund, support for digital content creators, and plans to build an ultra modern recreation village for films and concerts.
