President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect. The decision was made in line with Article 146(9) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The announcement follows the submission of a report by a committee established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition lodged by Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori. The committee reviewed the petition, examined evidence, and concluded that Justice Torkonoo had engaged in stated misbehaviour as defined under Article 146(1).

In its findings, the committee recommended her removal from office, a decision that President Mahama was constitutionally bound to implement.
The Presidency emphasised that the removal was carried out strictly within the confines of the law, reflecting the constitutional principle that no public officer is above accountability.

This development marks a significant moment in Ghana’s judicial and political history, as it underscores the delicate balance between safeguarding judicial independence and upholding public trust in the justice system.
The announcement was formally communicated in a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Monday, 1st September 2025.
