In the scope of democratic continuity, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has formally invited President elect, John Dramani Mahama to a traditional handover ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Jubilee House.
The invitation came after the Electoral Commission has declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the December 7 general elections. Akufo-Addo reiterated his commitment to respecting the will of the Ghanaian people and given prominence to the importance of a peaceful transfer of power.
Speaking to a gathering of dignitaries earlier this week, Akufo-Addo said, “This transition reflects the strength of our democracy. We must uphold the principles that have guided our nation through decades of peaceful governance.”
The ceremony has intensified Ghanaians tradition and shall feature symbolic exchanges marking the end of Akufo-Addo’s tenure and the beginning of Mahama’s administration. This act reinforces Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
Observers have praised both leaders for their decorum during the electoral process and President Akufo-Addo emphasizes his administration’s readiness to ensure a smooth transition. Mr Mahama in response to the outgoing President has expressed his gratitude and has addressed the moment as “a testament to the resilience and maturity of Ghana’s democracy.”
This event will serve as a reminder of Ghana’s commitment to democratic principles and peaceful governance which further set as an example for the region and beyond.
