Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been formally charged with 23 counts, including culpable homicide, in connection with her tragic death on April 8, 2022. The Federal Government of Nigeria alleges that his abusive actions directly contributed to her untimely passing.
Osinachi, best known for her soul-stirring vocals on the gospel hit “Ekwueme,” was initially believed to have died from throat cancer. However, shocking revelations from her family, children, and close associates pointed instead to years of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse allegedly inflicted by her husband.
The charges against Peter Nwachukwu include physical assault, emotional torment, verbal abuse, and restrictions on Osinachi’s freedom. Reports reveal he isolated her from loved ones, controlled her finances, and subjected her to constant humiliation, even in public and among colleagues. Notably, he allegedly denied her access to medical care despite obvious signs of ill health.
An autopsy conducted by the National Hospital in Abuja revealed fluid around her lungs and tumor deposits in vital organs, but no external injuries. Despite this, the High Court ruled in October 2023 that the evidence presented by the prosecution was substantial enough for Nwachukwu to face trial. The court rejected a “no-case submission” from the defense, affirming that he has a case to answer.
Peter Nwachukwu is currently being held at the Kuje Correctional Facility as legal proceedings continue. The case has reignited nationwide discussions about domestic violence, patriarchy, and the need for stronger protections for women across Nigeria.
This landmark case could lead to a precedent-setting conviction and serve as a wake-up call to both the public and government on the dangers of unchecked domestic abuse.
