Parliamentary Committee on Education Tours Eastern Region SHSs Over the Impact of Double Track

Ghana’s Parliamentary Committee on Education has visited some Senior High Schools in the Eastern Region to assess how the double track system is affecting teaching and learning.

The tour formed part of efforts to identify challenges and propose solutions that will help the schools operate more effectively.

At Methodist Girls’ SHS, Headmistress Winifred Siebu Arthur said the school recently won the 2024 Akuapem North “Best School Farm” award. She also mentioned their past win in the 2018 World Space Week competition. However, she appealed for the quick completion of a GETFund dormitory block, which has delayed.

“If that is quickly completed for us, it will help a lot,” she said.

At Aburi Presby SHS, Headmistress Mrs. Joyce Appiah said heavy rains had damaged some school buildings.

“The roofs are caving in,” she reported. Despite this, the school has continued to do well in WASSCE.

Adonten SHS Headmaster, Mr. Samuel Obeng Asamoah, also praised his students’ performance, especially reaching the quarter-finals in the National Science and Maths Quiz. But he raised concerns about pressure on facilities due to the double track system.

“Our facilities are not enough,” he said. He added that the school needs 195 dining hall tables, as some students are forced to stand while eating.

Mrs. Wilhelmina Obuobisa-Atakora, Headmistress of Aburi Girls SHS, spoke of her school’s recent achievements in public speaking and debates. She also mentioned a lack of classroom furniture and a leaking roof at the old chapel.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe, assured the schools that the Education Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has directed GETFund to release funds to complete stalled projects and provide furniture.

The Committee is expected to submit a report that will inform future decisions on how to address the problems associated with the double track system.
