Over 50,000 Teachers Promoted After 2024 Aptitude Test – GNAT Confirms

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has announced major progress in addressing promotions and payroll challenges affecting its members.

According to GNAT, 50,458 teachers out of 54,227 who passed the 2024 aptitude test have been promoted. The promotions were implemented in April 2025 following a meeting between GNAT and the Ghana Education Service (GES) on April 25, 2025. Plans are underway to finalize promotions for the remaining teachers from the 2024 batch, along with the backlog from 2023, by May 2025.

GNAT also reported that payroll issues are being resolved. Out of 1,579 teachers previously removed from the payroll, 1,417 have had their salaries reinstated. The association indicated that the cases of the remaining 162 teachers are still under review.

On lower rank promotions, GNAT confirmed that the GES has received placement data from all 16 regions, with promotions expected to be completed in May 2025. Teachers who returned from further studies, whose upgrades have been delayed since 2023, are also expected to be upgraded by the end of May.

A stakeholders’ meeting is scheduled for May 2025 to set dates for the next promotion aptitude tests.

GNAT expressed appreciation to President John Mahama for announcing a 20 percent allowance for teachers working in deprived areas. The union also welcomed the decoupling of Director II and Director I positions from political districts and regions, a move expected to ease the promotion of Deputy Directors.

GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, described the developments as a “breakthrough” and thanked both the President and the GES for their cooperation.

These resolutions follow demands made by GNAT earlier this year, when the union had set an April 30, 2025 deadline for the government to address issues including the implementation of the Scheme of Service and HRMIS challenges. The National Labour Commission had mediated talks between teacher unions and the GES to reach this point.
