Organised Labour in Ghana has issued a strong caution to President John Dramani Mahama regarding the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office. The labour groups expressed deep concern over what they describe as a move that could jeopardise the stability of Ghana’s democratic institutions if not handled with the utmost care and constitutional respect.
According to them, the judiciary plays a central role in maintaining checks and balances in governance, and any attempt to remove the Chief Justice must be transparent, justified, and devoid of political motivation. They emphasised that such an action, if perceived as politically driven, could damage public trust in the justice system and undermine the rule of law.
Labour leaders have therefore urged President Mahama to prioritise national interest and unity, and to respect the constitutional procedures that govern the appointment and removal of top judicial officers under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
They also called on civil society organisations and the general public to stay vigilant and defend the integrity of Ghana’s democracy during this critical time.
