Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party for the 2024 election, unveiled plans for the prompt payment of 177 million Ghana cedis towards Nursing Training allowances. This announcement was made during this year’s International Nurses Day celebration held in Accra on May 14, 2024.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the persistent appeals from trainee nurses concerning the prolonged delay in the payment of their allowances. He empathized with their plight, noting the adverse impact of these delays especially on their practical training sessions. Consequently, he assured the audience that swift action had been taken to address the issue, with directives issued to the Controller and Accountant-General for immediate action.
“I wish to assure the nursing trainees that by Thursday this week, the Controller and Accountant-General is transferring an amount of GH₵177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay the trainee allowances,” Dr. Bawumia reiterated.
Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia outlined additional measures aimed at bolstering the healthcare sector, including the provision of financial clearance for unposted nurses and initiatives such as vehicle waivers for healthcare workers. He underscored the government’s proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by healthcare professionals, reaffirming its dedication to the welfare of the nursing fraternity.
“I have conferred with the Ministry of Finance, steps are being taken to clear the unemployed nurses and by August that will be done, notwithstanding the backlog, our government has provided the highest recruitment,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized, highlighting the government’s concerted efforts to streamline recruitment processes and alleviate unemployment within the nursing sector.
