The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central parliamentary by-election to replace the late Dr Murtala Mohammed, who died in the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on August 6, 2025.
The decision was taken at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution.
The NPP explained that the move was informed by the sensitive circumstances surrounding the vacancy and the potential for heightened political tension. “It would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP at this time,” the party stated.
According to the statement, the NPP believes that avoiding acrimony often associated with by-elections will help maintain unity and prevent further polarisation in the country.
The party emphasised that the greatest tribute to Dr Murtala Mohammed and the other crash victims is not only to continue the fight against illegal mining but also to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition for the people of Tamale Central.
The NPP pledged to respect the national interest by abstaining from the contest when the Electoral Commission opens nominations in line with Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution.

The party extended its condolences to the bereaved families and urged all Ghanaians to remain united in this period of national mourning.
