NDC parliamentary candidate, Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo has been declared winner in the Akwatia by-election held on September 2, 2025, following the untimely death of late NPP MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.
The constituency, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region, was thrust into a by-election after Kumi’s demise on July 7, 2025, a few months into his term.
Bediako confidently stated that he “read the mood” of the electorate, adding, “it’s going to be a win, a win and a win for me”.
Polling showed a clear edge for the NDC hopeful, while NPP’s Solomon Asumadu remained hopeful for continuity but was overshadowed by observed NDC momentum.
Analyst Mussa Dankwah of Global Info Analytics had predicted an NDC win with at least 53 % of the vote.
Counting reports surfaced across social media, portraying NDC supporters in jubilant celebration as results leaned their way.
Some NPP supporters openly conceded on camera, acknowledging Bediako’s win despite their party allegiance.
The result flips the seat back to the NDC after Ernest Kumi’s brief win for the NPP in December 2024.
According to reports, the outcome has reinforce NDC’s prominence in Akwatia as the general parliamentary contests draw nearer.
