National Education Conference Must Drive Real Change – Dr Frank Bannor Warns

A leading policy expert has cautioned that Ghana’s National Education Conference risks becoming another missed opportunity if it fails to deliver tangible results.

Dr Frank Bannor, Head of Research at the Danquah Institute, said the conference—held to review Ghana’s education policies and practices—should not end in lofty speeches and policy papers without real impact.

“A National Education Conference without real action is just another wasted opportunity,” Dr Bannor told JoyNews. He called for a deliberate shift from talk to execution, urging the government and stakeholders to ensure that decisions made at such gatherings are implemented.

The event, aimed at tackling systemic challenges and enhancing the country’s educational outcomes, has been described by the Ministry of Education as part of a broader effort to improve learning quality and access across all levels.

However, Dr Bannor stressed that without accountability, implementation frameworks, and follow-up mechanisms, the ideas shared will yield little benefit to students or the education sector.

This year’s conference comes amid ongoing debates over education financing, infrastructure deficits, and calls to review major initiatives like the Free SHS policy.
