Namibia Swears-in First Female President

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah - Namibia President

H.E. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been sworn in as Namibia’s first female president. The swearing-in event took place on Friday, March 21, 2025.

The 72-year-old Nandi-Ndaitwah won the Namibian general election in November 2024 to become the first female president in the nation’s history.

She was officially declared the president-elect of the Republic of Namibian general election on 3 December 2024, making her the first woman to hold the position. Nandi-Ndaitwah received 683,560, representing 58.7% of the vote, defeating Panduleni Itula and McHenry Venaani.

H.E. Nandi-Ndaitwah is now one of the few female presidents across the African continent, including H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, and H.E. Joyce Hilda Banda of Malawi.

It is important to note that Sirleaf and Banda, both former leaders, as well as Tanzania’s current president, Hassan, attended Nandi-Ndaitwah’s inauguration ceremony.

H.E. Nandi-Ndaitwah has served as a lawmaker in Namibia since 1990 and was the foreign minister before being appointed vice president, eventually ascending to the highest office in the land as president.
