In a reflective write-up, Ennin Mensah Joseph shared his experiences over the past years, offering insight into his personal and academic journey.

Here’s his story:

“It’s been years of more tears than wins – forget about the fine pictures. It all started like a joke, and I never imagined I’d come this far. Life can be rewarding, but it’s often filled with challenges. I am Ennin Mensah Joseph. My academic journey began in Ajumako Osedzi, where I attended school before moving to Accra due to my father’s work. In Accra, I attended Manhyia Methodist from Kindergarten 1 to Primary 1 between 2005 and 2007. However, I had to return to Ajumako Osedzi, where I continued at the same school from Primary 1 to Primary 4. Unfortunately, I had to leave again in the first term of Primary 4 due to marital issues in the family.

My mother took us from the Central Region to Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana, a move that was both mysterious and life-changing. We left town without notifying anyone, not even my father. My mother was well-known in Ajumako for her hard work, selling corn dough throughout the town. Despite her long stay in the town, she never had any conflicts with anyone. My mother has been an outstanding figure in our lives, always striving to provide for us.

In Kwahu, we met uncles who were willing to sacrifice everything to see us succeed. Among them, Nana Aniniagyei Kessy, Wofa Kofi Osi-Aboɔ, and the late Uncle Agyemang were particularly supportive. Nana was especially dedicated, ready to give his last for our wellbeing. I enrolled at Mpraeso Methodist Primary 4 during the third term. Initially, my academic performance was poor—I ranked 35th out of 45 students, mainly because I had missed a lot of assignments. I was told to repeat the class, but I refused. Instead, I joined my colleagues in Class 5, and by the end of the first term, I ranked 9th, much to the amazement of my teachers and the delight of my uncle. The following terms saw continued improvement, with me ranking 5th and 3rd respectively.

This upward trend continued until Junior High School (JHS) 2 when Boadi Ebenezer, who usually ranked second, left the school. I took over the second position and maintained it until we completed JHS in 2017. Despite the challenges, I scored an aggregate of 21 in the BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination). Although this result was not ideal, my uncle encouraged me to persevere. I was placed at Nkawkaw Senior High School, where I intended to study science but was instead offered General Arts. My late uncle Agyemang accompanied me to school and gave me a piece of advice that has stuck with me: ‘This is not just a school; great people have been here before you. Now, it’s your turn. I trust in your capabilities. If you encounter any problems, unless it’s misfortune, don’t expect us to intervene. But whenever you make us proud, we’ll be there for you.’ May his soul rest in peace.

With my uncle Nana Kessy’s support, I became one of the best General Arts students in my year group, even earning the title of a quiz boy, despite my lack of interest in General Arts. I took the Nov/Dec exams in SHS 2, earning 3 A’s, 3 B’s, 1 C, and an unfortunate D7 in core mathematics, which hindered my university dreams. However, I didn’t let this setback define me. I sat for the WASSCE 2020 exams, earning 4 A’s, 3 B’s, and a C. I managed to improve my core mathematics score, which allowed me to apply to KNUST.

KNUST had been my dream university since JHS 2 when my school took an excursion to the campus in 2016. I was offered admission to study Political Science, a moment of immense joy for me. However, it was also a tough time for my family, as four students, including myself, entered university on the same day. Despite the financial strain, my uncle, ‘Wofa Pa Y3’—a good uncle indeed—made it possible for me to pursue my dreams.

On my first day at KNUST, I was overwhelmed by the difficulty of accessing student-related information. I saw this as an opportunity to solve a problem, and that’s when the idea of social media came to mind. Although I had been involved in social media since 2015, 2020 marked a turning point for me. I created the ‘Voice of KNUST,’ which was challenging to manage at first. Fortunately, I met Augustine Kwakye, an intelligent and life-changing friend. I invited him to be part of the initiative, and he accepted without hesitation. Now, he is the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of the Voice Wave Media Company Limited. Together, we’ve made a significant impact on university media.”
