Manchester United has just announced the dismissal of Erik ten Hag as manager. This decision follows a poor start to the season, highlighted by an abysmal performance against West Ham United, which saw them suffer a 2-0 defeat yesterday at London Stadium, the home ground of West Ham.
The team is currently sitting in 14th position in the Premier League table.
Ten Hag’s tenure lasted two and a half years, during which he spent over £600 million in transfer fees. However, the team’s performance did not reflect the significant investment made in the squad.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as interim head coach while the club searches for a permanent replacement. The search for a new manager is already underway, with a shortlist of approximately five candidates, whose names will be communicated later.
Some pundits, like Gary Neville, are not surprised by the decision, citing the team’s lack of identity and style under Ten Hag. Others, like Jamie Carragher, believe the decision should have been made sooner, suggesting that retaining Ten Hag in the summer was a ‘daft decision.’
Their current position also has historic implications, as Manchester United has won just four of their 14 games this season, with 11 points representing their second-lowest tally after nine games in Premier League history.
What do you think about Ten Hag’s departure? Was it the right call, or too little, too late?
