During his visit, he commended the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response to the inferno and emphasized the urgent need for better market planning and fire safety measures to prevent future disasters. Speaking to the media, the president reiterated his commitment to supporting those who lost their livelihoods and called for a collaborative approach between local authorities, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and the government to enhance fire prevention strategies in major markets.
Meanwhile back in Accra, on his official X page, Mr. Mahama has expressed his sympathy with the victims and the entire Ashanti region.
I am deeply saddened by the destruction at Adum market in Kumasi after Friday’s fire. My heart goes out to the affected traders. I visited the market and commended the Fire Service for their efforts, but access remains a major challenge. We must prioritize better planning in our markets. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved fire safety.
I’ve directed the Chief of Staff to work with the Ashanti Regional Minister and NADMO to assess losses and provide immediate relief. A major concern is the use of gas cylinders and cooking in markets. These practices are extremely dangerous. Our traders and shop owners must be educated and committed to fire safety to prevent future tragedies
– John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana
