Kumasi Cultural Centre: Where Nature and Heritage Breathe as One

When most people think of the Kumasi Cultural Centre, they imagine traditional dance, crafts, ancient art, and storytelling rooted in Ashanti greatness. But during a recent visit by Mr. Boakye Amponsah, popularly known as OgaLee, something else stood out as the Centre’s deeply connect with nature.  It turns out that Kumasi Cultural Centre isn’t just preserving history but also  nurturing a botanical legacy that’s just as powerful. A walk through the grounds feels like stepping into an open air museum of important plants as many of which are used for healing, building, and beautification.

Here are just a few treasures rooted in the soil of the Centre

1. Cedrela odorata (Cedrela) – prized for timber and furniture-making.

2. Cocos nucifera (Kube / Coconut tree) – provides fruit, thatch roofing, baskets, and refreshing drinks.

3. Holarrhena floribunda (Sese / False rubber tree) – a known medicinal plant.

4. Roystonea regia (Royal palm) – stands tall for beautification and landscape design.

5. Peltophorum pterocarpum (Yellow flame tree) – loved for both its ornamental value and medicinal uses.

6. Mangifera indica (Mango tree) – offers sweet fruit and medicinal benefits.

7. Tabebuia rosea (Rose trumpet tree) – known for its shade and charm.

8. Cassia fistula (Golden shower tree) – both healing and eye-catching.

9. Eucalyptus grandis (Rose gum) – used for timber and paper pulp.

Each tree tells a story—not just of utility, but of legacy, sustainability, and survival. These plants silently echo the values of the Ashanti people: strength, healing, and harmony with nature.

But the wonders don’t stop at the roots but ends with other beautiful but equally important artifacts that could be a topic for another day.

The need to protect nature through the environment gave prominence to this capture to reiterate the essence of the maintenance of the ecosystem.

This resonate with the old adage which says “ if the last tree dies ,the last person will also dies”
