Non-teaching staff at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have declared an indefinite strike in protest against their exclusion from the university’s governing council.
The strike, led by the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH), follows the appointment of a rival union, TEWU-TUC, by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) as the representative on the council. TEWU-GH argues that despite being the majority union on campus, their members have been sidelined.
Charles Arthur, Chairman of TEWU-GH at KNUST, said the decision was unjust and undermines the democratic rights of their members. “We cannot sit idle while decisions are taken over our heads. The strike will continue until justice is served,” he stated.
The union is demanding that GTEC reverses the appointment and reinstates what it describes as fair and inclusive representation. The action is already impacting administrative operations across campus, with students and lecturers experiencing delays in support services.
The strike highlights growing tensions between union bodies on university campuses and raises broader questions about representation and governance within Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
