Rumors suggesting that Kennedy Agyapong, the former six-term Member of Parliament for Assin Central and recent NPP presidential aspirant, might break away from the party have been addressed by his camp.
The speculation followed the NPP presidential primaries, where Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia won with 56.48% of the votes, while Agyapong placed second with 23.76%. Social media amplified claims that Agyapong could form a new political movement ahead of the 2028 elections.
Official Statements from Kenndy’s Camp
Mr. Agyapong’s spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, emphasized:
“Kennedy Agyapong has not and will not break away from the New Patriotic Party. He remains fully committed to supporting Dr. Bawumia and the party in the upcoming elections.”
One of his aides, George Sarpong, also clarified that Agyapong’s absence from recent party events, such as the NPP Thanksgiving Service, was due to being out of town and not a sign of disloyalty.
Despite these denials, one report from GhPage claimed that Agyapong had quit the NPP and formed a movement called “The Base”, potentially aimed at contesting the 2028 elections. However, these claims have not been confirmed by Agyapong or his official spokespeople. The majority of sources maintain that he remains a loyal NPP member.
While rumors continue to circulate, the latest official statements confirm that Kennedy Agyapong has not left the NPP and will continue supporting the party’s leadership and its plans for the 2028 elections.
