Ghanaian winger recognized for exceptional community engagement during challenging Premier League season. Southampton FC’s 2024/25 season was marked by adversity, culminating in relegation from the Premier League. Amidst these challenges, Ghanaian international Kamaldeen Sulemana emerged as a beacon of positivity who has earned the club’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Community Champion award for his outstanding off pitch contributions.
The 23-year-old winger who joined Southampton from French side Stade Rennes in 2023 distinguished himself through active participation in community initiatives led by the Saints Foundation. Notably, during a visit to Oasis Academy Mayfield, Sulemana adeptly engaged with a diverse group of students, tailoring his communication to resonate with each individual. On another occasion, he extended his visit to a local tournament as he offered encouragement to all participants and ensured memorable interactions. Sam Fulling, Managing Director of the Saints Foundation lauded Sulemana’s commitment, stating, “Kamaldeen impressed our project staff with his dedication and ability to engage meaningfully with participants as he brought a positive experience for all involved.”
Despite Southampton’s on-field struggles, including a 20th-place finish and early relegation, Sulemana’s community involvement provided a silver lining. His recognition justified the vital role football play beyond the pitch, serving as role models and agents of positive change within their communities.
