Just 22 staff supervising 5,000 students at Accra Academy – Headmaster Reveals

The Headmaster of Accra Academy Senior High School, Emmanuel Ofoe Fiemawhle, has revealed that a severe lack of on-campus staff accommodation is contributing to growing indiscipline among students.

According to Mr Fiemawhle, only 22 staff members currently live on campus to supervise nearly 5,000 students—an overwhelming ratio that he says makes effective management of boarders extremely difficult.

Speaking during a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, he called for urgent investment in residential infrastructure to support school staff.

“If you want to look at the sources for indiscipline, it is because the numbers are not enough to manage the students as boarders,” the headmaster stated.

He appealed for the issue to be considered a priority under the GETFund, lamenting that the school has not received any recent support for residential development.

Chairman of the Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, acknowledged similar staff shortages in other schools visited and pledged that the Education Ministry would seek clearance from the Finance Ministry to recruit more teachers and support staff.
