Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections, has refuted claims that the NPP lost the election because he is a Muslim.

This statement was made by Dr. Bawumia at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, ahead of the NPP’s ‘Thank You Tour.’

Dr. Bawumia noted that many people have shared their views on why the party lost the 2024 elections, with one of the reasons being that voters rejected the NPP because its flagbearer was a Muslim. He strongly dismissed this claim as false and mere propaganda, urging Ghanaians—especially NPP supporters – to disregard such baseless accusations and instead focus on facts and data.

He further explained that out of the 10 candidates who contested in the party’s presidential primaries, he was overwhelmingly elected by delegates, the majority of whom were Christians.

“It’s only propaganda,” he asserted. “All the research ruled out religion and tribe as factors. I’m proud that as a party—and as a country—our political choices are not driven by religious or tribal affiliations.”

He called on Ghanaians to reject divisive narratives and remain united. “We are one nation. Whether Muslim or Christian, we rise and move forward together toward the progress and development we aspire to.”

Dr. Bawumia concluded by saying, “I am convinced, and all the data also proves, that using my faith as the reason for our loss is a total lie and purely propaganda.”
