How Sam Dede’s Role in Issakaba Changed His Life

Sam Dede accepted the role of Ebube in the Nollywood film Issakaba whilst he was still a university lecturer.  Despite initial reservations about how his students might perceive his on-screen vigilante persona, Dede’s decision proved transformative.  The film not only catapulted him to continental fame but also solidified his status as a cultural icon.

Issakaba, an anagram of “Bakassi,” was inspired by the real life Bakassi Boys, a vigilante group known for their unconventional methods of justice.  The film resonated deeply across Africa with its gripping narrative and moral undertones.  Dede’s portrayal of Ebube, the fearless leader of the Issakaba boys left an indelible mark on audiences.

One of the film’s standout features was its rich tapestry of proverbs which added depth and authenticity to the storyline.  Some memorable proverbs from the movie include:

“A river does not flow through a forest without bringing down trees.”

“The child who says the mother will not sleep, he too will not sleep.”

“The smoke and the rabbit have never been friends.”

These sayings not only enriched the dialogue but also offered reflections on justice, morality, and societal values.

Dede’s dual role as an actor and educator allowed him to bridge the gap between theory and practice.  His students benefited from his real world experiences as gained insights into the intricacies of film and performance.  As he once remarked, “I gather experience with which I train my students. Apart from the academic aspect of it, my students get hands on experience about the industry.”   The enduring impact of Issakaba is evident in its upcoming narrative Issakaba, the Return, where Dede reprises his role as Ebube.  Reflecting on the film’s relevance, he noted, “The evil we fought against 25 years ago still lives with us.”  This sentiment emphasized the film’s continued resonance in addressing societal challenges.
