Health Minister Swears in New Boards of Key Health Institutions

Ghana’s Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated the newly appointed boards of four key health sector agencies, a strategic move aimed at reinforcing the governance and regulatory capacity of Ghana’s health system as the country advances toward universal health coverage.

The agencies—Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, Medical and Dental Council, National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the Pharmacy Council—will play central roles in the implementation of key health reforms, including the anticipated rollout of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares).

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, the Health Minister emphasised the importance of effective leadership, collaboration, and accountability among the boards. He called on the newly inducted members to align their mandates with Ghana’s broader public health goals, particularly in addressing rising healthcare demands, improving service delivery, and combating non-communicable diseases.

The Medical and Dental Council was tasked with enforcing professional standards and ethical conduct across all regions, ensuring that Ghanaians receive safe and competent medical care. The NHIA, meanwhile, was encouraged to align its benefit packages with national health priorities and make financing for chronic disease management more responsive and sustainable.

Turning to the Pharmacy Council, Hon. Akandoh charged the new board to enhance regulatory oversight in the pharmaceutical sector, eliminate the misuse of opioids, and improve medicine distribution systems in collaboration with both public and private sector stakeholders.

The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives was urged to take the lead in workforce reform by improving training and continuous professional development to retain skilled health personnel and mitigate the effects of health worker migration.

“Irrespective of whatever we will do, the ultimate goal is the common Ghanaian,” the Minister said, urging all agencies to place patients at the centre of every policy and reform.

The newly sworn-in boards are expected to collaborate closely in building a stronger, more inclusive health system that meets the evolving needs of the Ghanaian population.
